Asphalt Shinglescontractor
Asphalt roof shingles are the most popular roofing material used on homes across North America. They are designed to protect a home through decades of weathering with minimal upkeep and are available in hundreds of colors and styles. Consequently, there are two more commonly used types; 3-Tab and Architectural. Let’s discuss these further.
3-Tab (builder Grade)
A 3-Tab has been the most common shingle installed by builders for years. Although that is slowly changing. It’s slightly cheaper and significantly less value by comparison to asphalt Architectural Shingles. A 3-Tab shingle is roughly 3 feet long, a solid shingle with 2 slits on the exposed portion creating 3 tabs. This shingle ranges in tolerating wind gusts up to roughly 60 mile per hour. Greater wind gusts or sustained winds will bend the tabs up causing a crease. Unfortunately, this crease will loosen granules causing them to fall off, exposing the asphalt to the UV of the sun. With time, the damaged shingle tab will fall off.
Architectural shingles
Also called composite, laminate, or dimensional shingles, architectural shingles are made from asphalt, but are much more durable and long-lasting design than typical asphalt shingles. They are also algae-resistant, fire retardant, and have a high wind tolerance. Unlike 3-Tab, architectural shingles are made of three separate sections. The upper portion and lower portion are bonded together at the nail line. In addition, the bottom section has an additional layer laminated on. It’s called a dragon’s tooth as it has notches. This gives it a dimensional look. Architectural shingles range in tolerating wind gust up to and exceeding 110 mph. With the installation of the right components, some manufactures will warranty up to 130 mph winds. However, GAF is a leader in the market with the only zero wind limitation shingle as their bonding points are also mechanically fastened during the manufacturing process.
